Sapphire (corundum) is found in many countries and comes naturally in every colour of the rainbow. Today, Ceylon, Madagascar, Thailand and Africa are the best sources. Sapphire is most sought after in blue, the best of all being cornflower blue, which is a medium intense vivid colour. In fact the word Sapphire implies that it is blue, other colours being termed Fancy Sapphires. Heat treatment is a globally accepted treatment for sapphires and has been so for thousands of years. Heating improves clarity and intensifies colour in stones that would otherwise be of poor quality. Over 99% of the worlds’ sapphires are heated. Unheated and untreated sapphires are incredibly desirable, but so rare that they command a much higher price. Winbolt Ltd hand pick stones from Ceylon, Madagascar and Africa.
