Emeralds are found in Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, Nigeria and Pakistan. Colombian stones are widely considered to be the best, the most famous mines being Muzo and Chivor. A good emerald needs to be vivid bright green. Colour is the most important aspect of looking at emeralds. Almost all stones will be included and this becomes part of the character of the stone, sometimes reflecting light in unusual ways. Some refer to this as the ‘jardin’ of the stone because when you look deeply into it, you see the inclusions and fissures creating the effect of leaves and plants.
