Rubies are actually red sapphires (corundum) and can be found in many countries around the world.
These days Burma, which produces fine stones, is no longer a legitimate source as political and human rights issues make them untenable. Ceylon, Madagascar and Africa, are excellent sources and can be as fine as anything produced in Burma.
The most desirable colour is Pigeon Blood Red, which is a rich, powerful colour. Traffic light red and various pinks are also very popular, but very dark red is not in demand.
Rubies often have inclusions within them, just as sapphires do, and a truly loupe clean stone is rare.
Winbolt Ltd only use pigeon blood red rubies from Africa and Ceylon, which are eye clean (fault free with the naked eye).
